One of the series that launched Studio MAPPA into its present-day prominence, Yuri on Ice takes us into the world of championship-level figure skating. Despite these shortcomings, the format does have great series exploring the LGBTQ experience in different contexts and genres so here are some of the best queer anime to watch. But these things are hardly unique to anime, unfortunately. To be clear, anime has more than its fair share of problematic portrayals such as uninterrogated crossdressing tropes, unchallenged homophobia and transphobia, and comedy at the expense of a queer character. Given the wide variety of stories, there’s a lot of anime about LBGTQ people and the queer experience. It’s not an exaggeration to say that there’s an anime for everyone, no matter their tastes or preferences. Junji Ito has been a successful manga creator since the 90s in Japan. But hopefully, if the show is successful enough, we can see one of these stories brought to life in a future season. The first season likely won’t use any from this upcoming manga collection. And now with The Liminal Zone there are even more stories for the show to use. He’s been writing and drawing his terrifying tales for the better part of 30 years, so he has plenty of content to pull from. Maniac is going to be a collection of anime adaptations of many of Ito’s greatest short stories. With Ito’s collaboration with Netflix coming out, this is a great time for the author to be releasing new short stories. The stories are Weeping Woman Way, Madonna, Slumber, and The Spirit Flow Of Aokigahara. It contains four different stories, each of which covers a range of topics from the practice of “professional mourning” to Japan’s infamous suicide forest. It gives a release date, a cover, and a few shots of Ito’s beautifully horrifying artwork within the book. The trailer came out across social media recently. With all of this content, it would seem as though Junji Ito has his hands full and can’t possibly do more. Also, an anthology series doing anime adaptations of many of his stories called Maniac is coming to Netflix. An adaptation of his all-time classic Uzumaki is coming to Toonami. Currently, he has two anime adaptations in the works. Junji Ito is more in the spotlight than ever right now.
